Hi, Im Dave, I'm new to this Blogging stuff but ill give it a go..
Life got pretty difficult for me with Cystic Fibrosis, and in the end i was listed for Double Lung Transplant. I was listed in February 2014 and received my Double Lung Transplant in 18/19th November 2014.
Before my transplant things were really tough for around 2 years, i couldn't walk far, i was on oxygen most of the day, couldn't climb the stairs etc so i bought myself a bike to get fit to manage day to day activities better, and in the end i couldn't even ride that very far with out becoming totally exhausted, then when in November when i had the call for transplant, life changed pretty quickly.
Whilst i was in Harefield Hospital recovering from a major Double lung transplant operation id spent quite a bit of time on the static bike to get moving and active, the first time on the bike i cycled around 3 miles that was 5 days after my operation, i knew i did the right thing going ahead with the transplant, 17 days after the operation i was home, it proved that the time i spent in the Gym with my Physio Steve in Llandough Hospital in Cardiff had paid off. Id encourage anyone that is waiting for Transplant to work hard to stay fit and strong, it really will help in your recovery.
When i returned back home in Brecon, i dug my Bike out of the shed, pumped the tires up, and went on my first ride with my cousin Matt, we set off along the canal towards Talybont a small village about 8 miles from Brecon, around 15 Miles later we returned back to Brecon, covered in mud and soaking wet, but it was awesome! I knew then i wanted to cycle as much and as far as i could..
I then decided id myself a new Bike, as a little New Years present form myself to myself i come home with an Orange Gyro 29er one day from Sunset Cycles in Cardiff, my mum thought i was crazy spending what i did on my new bike, and it was down to me to prove that i would make the most of my new purchase, since then she's in shock when she returns home and i haven't been on the bike.
Recently i decided i would like to do a challenge, as my Good friends Craig and Josh, they are brothers did the Brecon Beast Last year, a 45 Mile cross country e
ndruro event over the Brecon Beacons, while i was out watching and supporting them because Craig had borrowed my old bike to do the Beast on, i decided when i finally receive my transplant id like to do something like this.
So since my transplant i have been working towards doing the Brecon Beast in September, but since this is quite far away id like todo something sooner, so some other friends of mine suggested i give the Big boar Chase a go in the Forrest of Dean on May 17th, there are 4 millage's you can do, 21, 26, 40, 46 Mile so i signed u for the 26 Mile Ride, currently there are 830 other riders, I'm still trying to convince some friends to join me on the ride as a mate is getting married on the 16th they all fear they may be to hungover to cycle, so i may be by myself all day, but ill do it!!
If your interested in following my progress, i thank you for reading.
Here is a picture of my Bike, 2090ft up in the Brecon Beacons on the Gap Road.
Thanks
Dave.
